Lake Placid in the Fall is my favorite! The air is crisp and the leaves are changing. It’s the perfect time to get outside and explore before snow and ice can be found everywhere. With so many great things to do in Lake Placid in the Fall you won’t want to miss a thing!
Lake Placid in the Fall
Explore Mirror Lake by Boat
Mirror Lake is located right downtown in Lake Placid and is absolutely gorgeous. Many of the resorts that dot the shore of the lake have boats readily available for guests.
When I stayed at the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort during a 3 day weekend in Lake Placid, we took the boats they had out for a spin on Mirror Lake and had a blast! It’s perfect for the casual paddler.
Climb one of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks
The High Peaks of the Adirondacks are the 46 mountains scattered throughout the region. Some of them are very remote and require very long day hikes or overnights in shelters in the backcountry. Others are easy to get to and I encourage hikers to start with the easier peaks to prepare yourself and if you’re just visiting for the weekend.

Go to Whiteface Mountain’s Oktoberfest
Each Fall Whiteface Mountain hosts a great regional Oktoberfest. While I’m still partial to the real Oktoberfest in Munich, if you’re in the Northeastern US this one will satisfy.
At the base of the mountain there are oompa bands, traditional dancing, food and of course beer.
Make sure to take the Gondola to the top of the mountain to see the amazing views. There are a bunch of hikes at the top varying in length and difficulty. And yes, you can take your beer with you!
My personal favorite thing about Whiteface’s Oktoberfest is the alphorn players. They played at one of the overlooks at the top of the gondola and the sounds echoed off the surrounding mountains. I even got to try to play it myself and I got an echo!
Go Zip Lining with Experience Outdoors
Have you always wanted to be able to fly? Me too! Which is probably why I love going zip lining so much! When I worked for the Girl Scouts I ran high ropes course and zip line activities, so whenever I get the chance to go zip lining I do.
Experience Outdoors is located right in Lake Placid and they have an amazing zip line course! It includes 6 zip lines, 2 rappels, and a suspension bridge. You’ll also get amazing views of the Bobsled track over at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
I can’t say enough amazing things about the staff either. They really knew their stuff and were very safety conscious.
This activity is great for people of all ages, and is a safe space for dare devil kids to have some fun!
Lake Placid in the Fall: Visit the Olympic Jumping Complex
During my weekend in Lake Placid I got an Olympic Passport which allowed me to visit all the Olympic sites in and around Lake Placid. One of the places I visited was the Jumping Complex.
When we (I was with Sweet William) first pulled in there where a bunch of ski jump students doing jumps into the pool that is on site. They were doing flips and all kids twists and turns. This is how jumpers learn to do acrobatics in the air without hurting themselves in training. I could have watched them all day!
They we took the chair lift up to the top to see the ski jumps up close; They’re HUGE! I’m still in the head space that someone has to be a little nuts to do a sport like this, but I really love watching it.
While the larger of the two jumps is no longer operational, you can still take the elevator to the top. From their you’ll get spectacular views of the area and get to see the steep slope skiers go down.
