Hiking the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu should be on every traveler’s bucket list. It was on my 30 before 30 list and I did it just shy of my 30th birthday. This Salkantay Trek packing list will ensure you have everything you need to make your bucket list adventure everything you hoped it would be.
However, the most popular hike, the Inka Trail, is extremely crowded. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it’s an amazing hike, but if I’m going hiking, I want to be out there with as few people as possible. Anyone else? Take my advice on this one and do the Salkantay Trek, National Geographic named it the best way to trek to Machu Picchu.
The Salkantay Trek 5 days and 4 nights of glaciers, mountains, jungle and amazing views – including my personal favorite the Salkantay Pass. The Salkantay Trek distance is 72 kilometers (approximately 46 miles).

I’m a complete newcomer when it comes to hiking, so I really enjoyed reading this post. It’s very important to stay hydrated and dress right for these conditions, so thanks for the tips on clothing and equipment. I’ll bookmark this for the future!

Not a hiker and will never be one, but I was just thinking that’s a lot of stuff to carry.
Never say never. Youโd surprised at the things I have said never to and then happened to be true.

Interesting to see all the stuff a challenging hike requires for one to carry. I go hiking too but on lesser challenging ones and I’ve never been on a hike that’s taken more than a day (the Inca Trail for example) but this is a good list to refer back to, should I plan to go someday. The Platypus Hoser Hands-Free is an interesting find!
You should definitely plan to do it! it’ll be a challenge, but so worth it in the end!

We have that nice Sea to Summit dry bag. It works really great; it’s our constant companion when we go to the beach or go island hopping.
I bring it everywhere! It’s my best friend!

You had me at reversible bra! lol Seriously, this is super helpful. I wouldn’t even know where to begin packing for a multi-day hike, so this is great. Also, Peru is high on our South America itinerary, so this is so great to know about.
Amazing! Reversible bra. Do you think this list would be suitable for almost any trek?
I think it depends on the length of time and the weather. That being said, most of the gear on this list is very versatile.

Amazing tips! It’s helpful because I’m thinking about Camino de Santiago and I’m searching what would be the best to bring with me, thanks! ๐
Ooooooo! Lucky, that’s so high on my list!
I’ve started doing more and more hikes in the past years and still have yet to find a pair of comfy boots. The ones you suggested look great and will defs have to look into getting a pair myself now! Love the print too of those Move Mountains Leggings!!
I will be on that trip with WHOA 5/18-5/25/19 so Thank You for the great packing list and tips! I have a thing for packing too many socks and underwear so I am going to be looking at your suggestions on the socks. Looking forward to this trip and now to meeting you!
Great list! I’m going this October, and can’t wait. Would you recommend getting a pair of convertible trekking pants? Or is there something better, for the warmer weather? Thank you ๐
I’ve hiked with several people that love those pants. I’m personally not a fan as the zipper irritates my legs as I hike.
Thanks for the tips! What sort of bag pack size will fit all that on a 4 day trekking? I just bought a 36L.
If you’re going with a guide, that should be more than enough. If you’re doing it on your own, which I don’t recommend as you never know how you’re body will react to the altitude, get one that’s a bit bigger.
Josie, I hope you had an amazing time and that we’ll cross paths in the WHOA world soon!
Hi Edgar, thanks for the comment. Would you be interested in linking to my site or sharing this list with your female trekkers?
It was such a pleasure hiking with you Lee! I hope to see you again soon.
How did you like the boots I recommended?
